Best in Show by Christopher Guest
Spinal Tap was a classic comedy, as far as I'm concerned, and I was told more than once that I had to see this new film by Christopher Guest. To
top it off, I also saw something on t.v. that was 'the making of Best in
Show', all about the improvised process that produces this form of
excellent, funny mockumentary.
Unfortunately, 'the making of' also gave away all the best clips, so I realized I'd already seen half of the movie all out of sequence. But
that's my problem. Anyone who hasn't ruined the freshness will get a lot of good laughs from this study of dog shows and their contestants. Parker Posey and Catherine O'Hara are brilliant here, entirely believable in their roles.
Still, I have to say I love Spinal Tap much more and can watch it over and over. Rock stars are so rich and famous that they deserve to
ridiculed. I'm not really familiar with dog show trainers and contestants, and then the ridicule made me mildly uncomfy, like a snotty middle-class
person ridiculing the working class, even though there were some token
yuppies in the plot. The dogs were above it all, however, and anyone who
loves gazing at prize dogs will get an extra perk from this movie.
