Bridget Jones's Diary by Sharon Maguire

Okay, I was quite concerned about Renée Zellweger, as you may recall from my book review. She really did do the British accent impeccably, so I take back my evil thoughts there. And she is entertaining, although she isn't quite what I imagined Bridget Jones to be when I read the novel. I imagined her a bit prettier, sexier, more wench-like as many of my London acquaintances are. More AbFab, more Nigella Bites, you know? Colin Firth was perfect and I even had fun watching Hugh Grant, oh horrors. The pace was good, the story worked well, I laughed some. Everything has been simplified and Bridget's friends and family have vanished into some kind of background but this is a nice, entertaining little movie. Of course, it is based on a brilliant book so that was easy, hey?

Now my brain is busy wondering how on earth they would create the movie for the second book, due to the Mr. Darcy/Colin Firth subplot that becomes absurdist as Colin Firth IS Mr. Darcy and well ... you have to have read both books to understand what my babbling here is about. Life as art, art as life, what more can one say? Perhaps Helen Fielding brought her Mr. Darcy to life as Colin Firth by psychic powers. Oh dear, can this review be of any use to anyone? I think not. Will quit while am ahead.
