Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon by Ang Lee
Ang Lee can do no wrong, as far as I'm concerned. I enjoyed the Ice Storm so much that I'll even sit through odd experiments like the cynical western Ride With the Devil, which stars Jewel, for heaven's sakes. And now that he's winning awards and kudos left right and centre with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, I had no doubt it would be great. All his films are based on books, which gives them a nice literary logic.
This movie looks beautiful, and the female characters are all kick-ass and powerful, hurray! Skinny girls I know are signing up for martial arts courses based entirely on having seen this film. I would have LOVED this film when I was a young girl, and I'm sure girls today are desperately awaiting the video game version.
And there is the fight sequence in the tops of trees that will no doubt enter cinematic history as one of the most beautiful fights ever filmed. This is a mythic tale of warriors and their apprentices, love forsaken, and love found. So even though the story is very straightforward, and the characters less deep and intense than in his other films, he has made up for any loss we may feel with great action sequences and all that lovely seamless, flying around.
