Since You Were Mine by Sheila Cooper
I was shooting Sheila's promo photos back when we were jazz kids, and now that we are all grown up I design her website. But I am not saying you ought to check her out just because she's my old pal from way back. I'm saying it because Sheila is a vocalist/saxophonist who combines a tongue-in-cheek repertoire with her own lyrical style of playing and singing.
My favourite track on her new cd entitled "Since You Were Mine", is her rendition of "You Turned the Tables on Me". It fits her vocal style and her playing style (did I mention she does both? blame the run-on sentences on that!) like a glove. She called on fellow Canadian jazz grrl Renee Rosnes for the piano playing on this session. They're both New Yorkers now and have made themselves at home in the jazz world at large. As our first roving Jazz Grrl reporter, Sheila plans to add some interviews with her favourite women in jazz to this website eventually. They promise to be insightful and sassy, just like the grrl herself.
