Haven't We Met? by Diane Hubka
A friend had recommended Diane Hubka to me before I received this recording. And he's right, she's definitely the kind of singer I enjoy, very much herself with a voice that is unselfconsciously natural. I am reminded of the late Irene Kral when I listen to her, which probably has something to do with her relaxed and musical sense of phrasing. She's very comfortable in a light, swinging tempo, which highlights her phrasing well.
Notable also on this recording, she has selected a few compositions by women, Don't You Know Me by Marilyn Harris (one of my favourite cuts on this), Miss Harper Goes Bizarre with its witty lyrics by Meredith d'Ambrosio, and Thinking of You by Jan Leder. Also included are classics like Lazy Afternoon, Detour Ahead and Alone Together, done here as a spacey ballad. Diane Hubka definitely gravitates to wordy, articulate songs and luckily she enunciates well too so we can hear all 'em words. Very stylish.
