Emarcy by Helen Merrill
y father is a huge fan of Clifford Brown, so this is one of those albums that was permanently glued onto the turntable when I was growing up. It is a real classic, not only for Clifford Brown's contribution but also as one of the best albums by jazz singer Helen Merrill - her debut, no less! She's got a very distinctive tone, a husky timbre and natural delivery that is unlike anyone else.
Some of the excellent selections here include Helen Merrill's version of Billy Holiday's tormented ballad Don't Explain. Such angst and so beautifully expressed! Lots of great tunes performed here, including Born to Be Blue with its poetic lyrics and some classic swing tunes like Falling in Love with Love and Yesterdays (not the Beatles song). Quincy Jones arranged it all - he's a master of diversity in his career, non? Another must-have album for your collection.

Of particular note is Helen's rendition of "What's New", so expressive that upon first hearing this I actually cried.
'Cannot recommend this enough! :)
