at the Montreal Jazz Festival by Sherry Maricle and Diva

I joined an enthusiastic, enormous crowd of thousands of people to check out the all female big band Diva this week. The men were swooning and the women in the audience were looking intent and inspired. The band delivered a free-spirited and rambunctious set of songs from Broadway shows, including a tune only grrls can get away with "I Feel Pretty", and an excellent rendition of "In a Sentimental Mood" featuring the soulful tones of baritone saxophonist Lisa Perrott (sp?). It is shameful that seeing so many women together on stage playing jazz is still such a novelty, and we can only hope there will be many more occasions and female big bands to come. You go, grrls!
