Tuk and the Whale by Raquel Rivera

Welcome to the IMHO web-launch for Tuk and the Whale!

This book is inspired by, among other things, one of my favourite "Classics Illustrated" comic books I read as a kid, based on Herman Melville's Moby Dick; or, The Whale. What was it about that story of crazed revenge that captured my imagination so? Was it the sinister figure of the one-legged Ahab? The terrifying big white monster? Or that fact that it all played out on one of my worst phobias, the immensely deep unpredictable waters of the open sea? What a shivery-delightful combination.

Tuk and the Whale is not as dark a tale as that old comic book--nor presumably the original on which it was based. But I hope it also conveys the sense of adventure, suspense and the bravery that must have accompanied every small boat that launched itself off into deep waters in search of the great whales, whether they risked the dangers of tropical, temperate or arctic seas.

Thanks very much to Mary Jane Gerber for her charming illustrations (which I'll show you if you check out my reading below). A big thanks also to Groundwood Books for providing, as always, excellent editorship and a beautiful book. Finally my thanks to Kim Sang, to whom this book is dedicated. Like Tuk, Kim appreciates good tools--be they knives or useful software. Thanks for the video herein, Kim! (And the soft focus... love the soft focus.)

If you're interested in reading more of my thoughts on Tuk and the Whale, check out my interview by Julie Wilson for Anansi.

Tuk and the Whale is my third book for children. The other two were also celebrated here at IMHO a few months ago; please feel free to visit their launch if you missed it before.
