Bridget Jones: the Edge of Reason by Helen Fielding
Well, all the reviews said I'd be surprised to discover the sequel to Bridget Jones to be just as funny or funnier and it is TRUE! Hurray!
The plot is loosely based on the structure of an excellent Victorian novel, à la Jane Austen, which seems highly unlikely, I know, but it does suck one in the same way those fabulous old books do. It is a nice, strong basis for a lot of humour, and there is a lot of that - tons of witty jokes per page.
I gave the first novel to my brother recently, who began guffawing immediately and complains that it is hard to read on the streetcar - too much laugh out loud stuff in it. And promised him that once he'd finished he'd be gasping just as much with the second one. It's AbFab with Adrian Mole and your favourite witty friend after half a bottle of scotch all in one. And just when you might worry that the plot is deteriorating and heading too much in the direction of a Hollywood script, Fielding surprises you by making the jail in Thailand actually seem somewhat realistic.
And what do we think of Jim Carrey's wife in the role of Bridget Jones? I say, NO!! I don't care how fabulous an actress Rene Zellweger is ... you've just got to have the right accent to pull off this kind of character. Isn't it enough to have Gwyneth Paltrow and Minnie Driver simpering in fake British? Stop the insanity please. [JL]
