The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy by Vicky Iovine
This book was given to me, appropriately enough, by my girlfriend Nette. Neither of us has done this pregnancy caper before unless you count being on the inside. I've been through a few books on the subject already, and I would say that this one has got to be the next best thing to a gal-pal who's been there.
Iovine is funny, informative and reassuring as hell. Other books can get a bit too medical for my taste. They are good to have on the shelf, but I don't want to study every possible medical procedure I may or may not have to endure in this process; anticipation is the worst. Girlfriends' Guide takes you through all the IMPORTANT stuff: the fat issue, the mood swings, staying stylish as you get bigger and the stuff that happens to hair and fingernails; girlfriendy stuff that no one else will bother to remember to tell you. Even through the scary bit - The Delivery - Iovine kept me laughing, which really helped with my skyrocketing anxiety levels.
If I had to nitpick, I would object to her assumption that all her girlfriend-readers - ahem - income is on a par with her own, which I gather is significant. I didn't object to anecdotes about her supermodel girlfriend, as some have, but I did bridle at her assumption that we all had husbands who would be financing us completely. I also didn't appreciate the author photo on the back cover: a really cute mom, looking at LEAST half her age (she had her first baby when she was 38, if I recall). This mummy is slim, elfin, un-haggard and is surrounded by her four OUTSTANDINGLY attractive little children - you know big dark eyes, great hair, the works. Not that I'm competitive or anything.
