Indiscreet Journeys by Lisa St Aubin de Teran
This book is an anthology, and for me, they place a burden of adjusting to a new writer's voice just when you were getting settled into the last one. But getting beyond that personal foible, there are some dem fine stories in this anthology of women writers telling tales of wandering women. For nomads, adventurers, and armchair travellers, this is an excellent book for getting acquainted with some of the tales of and by women, through the past century or so. Special mention of personal faves are: "Medley" by Toni Cade Barbara. You gotta love a cheerful story of an untortured adventuress, just out to improve her standards of living, be with her daughter, and keep getting good sex in the bargain. Patrice Chaplin's "Albany Park" is a on-the-road story set in (1950s, 60s?) Spain. Excellent descriptions of important fashion and make-up principles. And finally "the Insect World" by Jean Rhys, the story of a sterssed-out day off in the life of a single woman in WWII-time London. I must look out for other stuff by these writers. At the time of writing, this book was not available, the publisher was out of stock. However amazon.com suggests you check for yourself in case it's become available again.
